PSYCHE

“Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you cannot see from the centre, big undreamed things. The people on the edge see them first.”

Our modern notion of Psyche is born out of an older understanding, Psyche as breathe - the invisible animating principle that fills the body. Psyche cannot be present without Eros. Eros, from the tongue of an exquisite human animal is “enfleshing, the making flesh, of the longing for an extraordinary life...to come out of our protective place and to expose the mutuality of need and longing and desire that characterize the truth of existence.” (Zhen Doa) My cultivated practice of crafted conversations holds Psyche and Eros close - sustains firm faith that touching, either literally, emotionally or intellectually is a significant end in and of itself. To loose faith in contact as a reason to live, not as way to get some place else, but as an essential purpose of life. Loss of faith in this quality of contact we get relegated to performing, to being objects of entertainment where relationships become about what they can produce. Hence our conversations fervently uphold the poetics and practice of Eros and Psyche. However brief our brushing, the impact I hope, will be significant.

Methodologically our work together will be rich and take numerous forms. Initially the encounter remains undetermined, however in time a weave emerges that is at once conversational, practical, imaginative, creative and therapeutic. Although the modalities of our work will be various a consistent thread runs throughout - to create an internal platform, a pool of resources to draw from and live with. The form of our work is the content, in that the container we create is pertinent and particular to you. Over accumulated years of one to one, collaborative encounters, clients have found me warm, radically receptive, responsive and understanding - able to shape shift to whatever concerns or practical problems arise. Together we will become agile edge dwellers, where kindness and care are the root currency. Our conversations are revered as a devising art, curiosity crafts, creatively enabling and a contribution to co-creative multi species world making. What I hope lives on is a way of being with yourself, attentive to what is usually overlooked or relegated as redundant . As a weaver of expanded perspectives I will sit along side you, attend carefully and quietly, listen without a predetermined agenda and come into close dialogue with whatever is present, verbal and non verbal. Together we will turn worry into wonder, refuse a hierarchy of sense making, instead cultivate a somatically infused, reflective enquiry with the layers and lives of Psyche - within and without.

The mentoring strand within these crafted conversations has been gently directed to working alongside learners, livers, who find it hard to fit into mainstream modes of thinking, doing and reflecting. As a Dyslexic and Dyspraxic learner myself I have a keen, acute understanding of how to be with the uniqueness of what appears as difficulty, listen with my whole being and unpack what is presented as insurmountable into a creative, enabling mode of being. Having worked alongside many Dyslexic and Dyspraxic adults, both young and mature, the topics focused on can sometimes seem mundane. Handling time, spatial organisation, written work - these practical endeavors are always situated concurrently with existential and ontological realms of being. I recognise these multiple reverberations, understand and bring presence to the implications at play as we work with whatever emerges and it’s rippling out into holographic lived life. The regular rhythm suggested for sessions affords a felt experience of being remembered, remembering & attending are acts of care. Attend has tend in it - my work is to attend. Meeting - you - with a quality of attentive listening, presencing sensitivity as a radical act.

Our crafted conversations craft connection - where matter matters, mattering makes bonds. We will listen together without looking for meaning - rather than focus on getting something we will instead open ourselves up to hear something. I will seek to assist, activate and amplify the conscious dialogue between the multiple voices at play within you. To stimulate a lively, relational interconnectivity between all species of your ecosystem, the wild ones, the tiny and timid ones into a carefelt, cross pollinating ecosystem encounter. We are within the work together, concurrent edge dwellers re-wilding - imaginatively and actively - celebrating edges as furtive spaces of unexpected new growth. I hold an unwavering, impeccable faith in your resourcefulness and resilience, which, within a particular quality of presence, a time taken listening to the weather working through you, with you, can flourish. Whatever form our encounter takes the dedication is to create ever greater capacity to ‘stay with the trouble’, incorporate with gleeful bewilderment, that we remain forever strangers to ourselves attuned to enigmatic existence. A capacity where radical difference doesn’t need to be assimilated out of fear of ourselves, between ourselves and others. These words are my invitation for our journey - I hope you will join so we can co-create together and foster your carnal creation into it’s magnificent magnitude.

“I have known Amanda since October 2012, when first approaching her for art tutoring. We worked in this manner for three months. She invited me to see the world in innovative ways and explore new modes of expressing myself on paper. I would commonly arrive late for our art classes and sometimes become muddled finding the venue. Amanda identified my struggle to orient myself in time and space in a non-judgemental way, attuning to the underlying difficulty I had confronting the challenges of life, sometimes tackled by avoiding them altogether; high achievement in academia and my professional life had masked a basic incapacity to care for and organise myself properly.

Amanda's early diagnostic insight opened us into a more holistic way of working, the tutoring itself underpinned by attention to my physical, mental and emotional health. The quality of her empathic listening and the particularity of her suggestions set in motion a steady journey toward my well-being and brought more structure and order into my scattered life. Amanda brings a rare artistic intelligence to her tutoring. She came into my physical environment, offering refinements that have helped organise the space. I am increasingly aware of these refinements stealing inward, generally feeling less daunted after four years of work together. Amanda encouraged me early in our tutoring to capture thoughts on paper and pen and really pay attention to my choices, with many years sitting in front of a computer seemingly stifling this freedom. As a result of these shifts, I have a better ability to conceive time (planning and prioritising more effectively) and space (I do not get so easily lost on the way to meetings and rendezvous) and a generally improved proprioception. Notably, I received higher quality feedback for the first year of a postgraduate psychotherapy training qualification than in any prior period of my academic/professional life.

Amanda's tutoring/mentoring embodies both an emotional and neurological sensitivity. She helped me overcome periods of inertia (or writing blocks) by harnessing her gentle yet inspirational vocabulary to reframe them as energetic challenges to be conquered by paying attention to my environment. I have been fortunate enough to work with several psychologists and psychotherapists, coaches, tutors and mentors for the last twenty-three years, and of course coach myself. Amanda's tutoring is original and daring; it blends learning methodologies with the best of mindfulness-based psychotherapy. All of the important people in my personal and professional life have recognised the changes her approach is enabling, I remain very grateful for the impact of her work, our work together.”
